Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty examined by Curator Sue Canterbury, DS '94
A dozen members of the Wellesley College Club of Dallas enjoyed a private tour of the Dallas Museum of Art’s new exhibition Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty. The May 12, 2016 gathering (beginning with refreshments in the Atrium Café), featured curatorial insights from Sue Canterbury, DS ’94, the DMA’s Pauline Gill Sullivan Associate Curator of American Art, who generously and informatively guided the group through the stunning photography. In advance of the tour, she explained the show’s import:
“While Irving Penn was one of the key photographers of the twentieth century, this is the first retrospective of his work in twenty years, addressing not just the subjects for which he is most famous (his iconic fashion images for Vogue), but also the innovative works that stemmed from his private interests. Even though his work undoubtedly celebrates the beautiful, his mastery of lighting and composition, and his technical prowess in the dark room, achieved images that bestow an aura of profundity to the most seemingly mundane of subjects.”
Sue highlighted all of this – and more.
